About Smurdy

Smurdy is my geography quiz site. It started as a map quiz I made to teach myself geography, and I kept adding to it. All the quizzes are free.

I go by Smurdy online. I'm quite a big fan of geography and programming, and I spend an unreasonable amount of time staring at maps and thinking up geography challenges. I play the quizzes myself, so I often end up working on a feature because I wanted it while playing.

What is on the site

• Bordered map quizzes where you click or type countries, states, provinces and other subdivisions.
• Map quizzes with country or subdivision borders hidden.
• Point quizzes where you name which country or subdivision a red dot is in.
• Flag quizzes for the world and US states.
• Country capitals and all 50 US state capitals.
• Weak Spots, a saved list of the places you got wrong.
• A quiz browser with favorites, recent quizzes and search filters.

Why there are so many modes

There's a few different ways to fail at geography. Knowing where a country is does not tell you its capital, and flags take their own practice. I keep those as separate quizzes, including when you review mistakes in Weak Spots.

Weak Spots

Weak Spots remembers both the place you missed and the kind of quiz you missed it in. A correct answer in Retry Missed removes that entry from Weak Spots. Retry Missed is available at the end of a quiz, or you can open Weak Spots from the main menu later.

How places are counted

Country map quizzes generally follow Natural Earth's separately mapped features and group ordinary dependencies with their sovereign state. UN member and observer states have their own answers. Some de facto entities are also separate answers because they are mapped separately in the source data. Inclusion, naming, and displayed borders do not represent Smurdy's position on sovereignty or international recognition.

What's next

My to-do list changes too often to say for sure, but right now I want to add Locate modes, country-shape quizzes, more city stuff, Study Mode and a daily challenge. Subdivisions still have a lot of room to grow too. I spend most of my daily free time polishing Smurdy and adding new features, so anything that feels missing will probably be added eventually.
