About Smurdy
Smurdy is a free geography quiz site that I build and run independently. It is meant to make map practice quick to start and worth coming back to.
Pick a region, choose how you want to be tested, and start playing. There's no account setup, and most quizzes begin in a couple of clicks.
More than one kind of map quiz
I split the quizzes into four modes because recognizing a bordered shape is different from remembering a name or finding a country on a blank map.
Click the countries
See a place name and select the matching country or state on a political map.
Type the countries
Recall place names from the map instead of choosing from a list of answers.
Find without borders
Locate countries or states using coastlines, position, distance, and your mental map.
Find the point
Identify the country or state containing a marked point, with no political borders shown.
Practice by region
You don't have to start with the whole world. Every mode has smaller sets for places such as Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and US states. Learn one area first, then mix it back into a larger quiz.
Browse every available geography quiz.
How places are counted
Country map quizzes generally follow Natural Earth's separately mapped features and group ordinary dependencies with their sovereign state. UN member and observer states are kept as separate answers, along with a small number of de facto entities that the source data already represents separately. Inclusion, naming, and displayed borders do not represent Smurdy's position on sovereignty or international recognition.
Built around improvement
Weak Spots remembers both the place you missed and the kind of quiz you missed it in. A missed flag comes back as a flag, while typing, bordered-map, no-borders, and point questions come back in their own modes. Get that weak spot right in Retry Missed and it is removed from the list.
Who makes Smurdy?
I go by Smurdy online. I like geography and programming, and this site grew out of both. I still build it independently, with a lot of the smaller changes coming from things I notice while playing or from feedback people send.
Where the project is going
Flags and capitals are next on my list. I also plan to add Smurdy Daily and keep improving the current map modes, regional quizzes, and Weak Spots.
The order may move around as I work on the site, but those are the main additions I am aiming for.
